We are upgrading Crown Street in Surry Hills/Darlinghurst between Oxford Street and Devonshire Street.
The upgrade will make Crown Street greener, help increase passing trade for local businesses and make it easier for people to walk and ride.
The completion date is subject to detailed design which is currently under development.
What work is planned?
We will install:
- upgraded footpaths, kerbs and pedestrian ramps
- extended footpaths to replace current pop-up alfresco dining areas
- new garden beds, bubblers, bike racks and seating
- around 40 more trees, increasing canopy cover by more than 50 per cent
- underground electrical cables, replacing timber poles and overhead cables
- new smartpoles with LED streetlights that provide opportunities for hanging baskets and banners.
As part of the upgrade no car parking spaces will be lost on Crown Street. Instead the street will gain around 10 car parking spaces.
When did construction work start?
During April and May 2023, we undertook underground service investigations along Crown Street. Read more on this work in the notifications within the Document Library section.
In late 2023, we have completed upgrade works between Oxford Street and Campbell Street. See photo gallery for more details. There are Ausgrid upgrades to power and minor finishing works to be completed in the first half of 2023.
In late 2023/early 2024, thesection of Crown Street Upgrade cosntruction work is occuring between Campbell Street and Albion Street (including near Crown Street Public School in the NSW school holidays).

When we will be working and what to expect?
Construction work will be carried out generally during the day between 7:30am and 5:30pm Monday to Friday and 7:30am to 3:30pm on Saturdays.
If there is wet weather or other delays, our team will try to start the work the next day. If unsuitable weather continues, we will update this webpage and email information about any changes to our schedule.
We will aim to minimise night works as much as possible, however, if they are necessary, we will provide notification in advance to nearby residents and businesses.
Local businesses and residents will still be able to access properties on Crown Street during our construction work. We will contact any directly impacted properties in advance if we need to temporarily restrict access during construction.
The safety of the community, businesses, residents and staff is our top priority.
Thank you for your patience while we complete these important works.
How will the work affect you?
We will work to minimise impacts during our construction work. However, there may be machinery noise, temporary changes to traffic, parking or pedestrian access. We will work with nearby residents and businesses and provide notification ahead of work in the area and do everything we can to minimise potential impacts.
We look forward to working with you to deliver this important project and thank you for your patience.
